The biggest gaming event of the year converged at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles as game developers, actors, composers and visual effects specialists attended the annual Video Game Awards 2016.

If this year was any indication into the future of video gaming, it’s a future we greatly anticipate…

Former vice president of Konami, Hideo Kojima, who couldn’t attend last year’s ceremony, won the Industry Icon Award. Kojima planned to leave the company after the release of The Phantom Pain. The company made a controversial move to audition a new cast and remove Kojima’s name from further marketing. He would eventually leave Konami in October 2015 to rebuild his own studio, Kojima Productions which debuted its first game, Death Stranding.

Blizzard’s Overwatch took home four awards (see below) including the big gong of the night, Game of the Year. According to Blizzard’s Ray Gresko said, “While we’ve been very happy with how the game has been received, we’re also extremely proud that this game and the world that we’re building has a message and it’s a message about heroism. It’s a message about diversity. It’s a message about a bright and positive and hopeful future. And these are all things that we really believe everyone needs a little bit of right now.”

The night’s other big winner was Niantic’s Pokemon GO, winning Best Mobile/Handheld Game and Best Family Game. Watch the acceptance speech from Niantic’s Tatsuo Nomura.
