The season to be merry is here and the infectious spirit is twirling about in the air. However, we can’t say much for our data, as many of us will be spending more money to buy data to keep up with social media posts and to enjoy gaming on our devices when travelling.

This will come in handy if you’re out of a Wi-Fi range or most probably flying. These games have the X-factor and you will need not worry about data all the time…

BADLAND (Frogmind)

Dark and ominous. Badland is the best side-scrolling game I have ever come across. The player controls a forest dweller who embarks on a journey to find out what’s happening within the forest.

Encountering a number of obstacles, the ultimate goal is to survive. This game is beautiful and gravity-defining. Pairing that with an ominous score that sends chills down your spine, Badland is a must for adventure thrill seekers.

Dumb Ways to Die (Metro Trains)

There hasn’t been a game that can make me laugh so hard and equally frustrate me.

Although I’m still figuring out how to spin Bungle in the opposite direction (sigh), as dim-witted and idiotic this game may appear, the objectives are simple yet gruelling to accomplish.

(scratches head…how do I dodge the baseball bat with Doomed?)

Angry Birds Star Wars II (Rovio)

The title alone just makes me laugh and freak out as Finnish developers, Rovio, paired up two of my favourite loves – Angry Birds and Star Wars. And they did a fantastic job with it.

Aptly named ‘Revenge of the Pork’, the Force is strong with this game, as it follows the familiar side-scrolling that Angry Birds is known for.

As much as I can’t contain my laughter every time I look at Chewy (Chewbacca for those that aren’t familiar with Star Wars lore), I have found a great appreciation for Rovio as my love for Star Wars will never…EVER…die.

The Trail (Kongregate Games)

I wasn’t expecting what I experienced when playing The Trail. Quite frankly, I’m still in awe…

The Trail is probably one of the best simulation games I’ve discovered this year, there hasn’t been a game quite close to it. The guys and gals over at Kongregate Studios have spell-bounded me, as I play a pioneer embarking on a journey collecting items, crafting them into products and discovering new places.

The graphics are average, tutorials are easy to understand and the navigation is a bit sticky, however, it did not dampen my journey with The Trail.

NOTE: However, when you build your house, you will require an internet connection until the house is complete.

Techie’s Choice – PinOut (Mediocre)

Addictive and entertaining. I’ve never found a game that not only grabbed my attention but sustained my attention for as long as PinOut did.

The folks at Mediocre have produced a game that looks like the pinball arcade machine from Tron: Legacy. Simple and straight-forward, all I could do is keep on playing…

NOTE: To continue from the last checkpoint, it will ask you to purchase its Premium package at a cost of R36,99 (from the Google Play Store) and R49,99 (from the Apple Store).

A huge special mention to Microsoft’s Solitaire Collection, even though it didn’t make my top picks. When it comes to card games, it’s a “You’ve seen it once, you’ve seen them all” scenario.

Since I have played the game on the desktop for years, the migration to Android seems to be a great move for users to continue their gaming experience on their Android devices.
